EU-VRi and Risk Management in line with ISO 31000

Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Jovanović was the liaison representative for The European Virtual Institute for integrated Risk Management (EU-VRi) at the TC 262 meeting in Amman. He is the CEO of EU-VRi and a renowned scholar at Steinbeis University, Berlin and the University of Novi Sad. He introduces EU-VRi and emphasizes their awareness of the work of TC 262. He also raises the awareness on the risk arising from silo thinking which is a challenge to ISO 31000 and at the same time its greatest opportunity for achieving global impact .

Risk Management and ISO 31000 in Sweden

Omar Harrami represented Sweden at the TC 262 meeting in Amman as the delegate of the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS). He explains that the use of risk management in Sweden has developed from being project and system specific starting in private organizations and lately in the public sector. He believes that ISO 31000 can continue to be the natural reference for all other standards that address risk management issues as long as it continues to be relevant for all types of organizations and contexts. For him there is a need to consolidate and diversify at the same time.

The Institute of Internal Auditors and Risk Management

At the TC 262 meeting in Amman Douglas J. Anderson was the liaison representative of the Institute of Internal Auditors, the international audit profession’s most widely recognized advocate and provider of specific standards serving more than 185.000 members from more than 170 countries and territories globally. He explains that risk management is a critical focus for internal audit as it is automatically occurring with every decision – not a separate process executed by risk management professionals. He urges internal auditors to explore which body in their country is engaged with TC 262 and consider offering their assistance to that Body.

Mohammad Mukhlis represented Indonesia at the TC 262 meeting in Amman as the delegate of the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN). He explains the structure of standardization in Indonesia and mentions that ISO 31000 adopted as a national standard has now been translated into Bahasa Indonesia the local language. He believes commitment of high level management and the awareness level to be the major obstacles to integrating risk management. He urges stakeholders in Indonesia to contact the members of the national technical committee 03-10 risk management to exchange information and knowledge.

Liane Sauer represented Canada at the TC 262 meeting in Amman as the delegate of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). She explains the long tradition of risk management and standards in Canada and why nevertheless ongoing efforts are required to promote the value of ISO 31000 in Canada. Also, she mentions the lack of senior management commitment, the belief that everybody is a »risk expert«, the fact that it is hard to quantify the value of risk management as some of the obstacles for integrating risk management within an organization and explains the three big challenges facing ISO 31000.

At the TC 262 meeting in Amman Vincent H. Tophoff was the liaison representative of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). He explained IFAC’s approach to risk management supporting both ISO 31000 and the COSO ERM Framework. Also, he explained that good risk management is the responsibility of everyone in an organization and emphasized the benefits of integrating the management of risk in all organizational activities in a manner ensuring that employees are doing their job well.

Francisco Maureira represented Chile at the TC 262 meeting in Amman as the delegate of INN, the Instituto National de Normalization. He explains that the ongoing revision of ISO 31000 has increased the number of experts on their national mirror committee. He names the lack of awareness as the biggest obstacle to integrating risk management into all organizational activities and awareness as being the challenge and the goal to push ISO 31000 forward towards the decision makers.

Andrés Sánchez represented Columbia at the TC 262 meeting in Amman as the delegate of ICONTEC, the Instituto Colombiano de Normas Téchincas y Certificación. He explains that one of the major stakeholders of risk management in his country is the Colombian government and that one of the biggest obstacle for integrating risk management is the organizational culture. His message to the community is to keep continuously aware of developments in risk management.

Marco Lustenberger represented Switzerland at the TC 262 meeting in Aman as the delegate of SNV, the Swiss Association for Standardization. He deems the breakdown of silos in risk management to be one of the main achievements of ISO 31000. The major challenge for the future standard will according to his assessment be to remain sufficiently generic while at the same time being sufficiently sophisticated. Marco expects a family of standards to develop over time for different needs.

Feten Ammar represented Tunisia at the TC 262 meeting in Aman as the delegate of INNORPI, the Institut National de la Normalisation de la Propriété Industirelle. She explained the activities of this organization. They joined ISO/TC 262 only in September 2016 but had adopted ISO 31000 earlier. Since then more and more organizations in Tunisia started implementing risk management.

Mike Tarrant represented Australia at the TC 262 meeting in Amman as the delegate of Standards Australia. He explains that risk management is a mature discipline in Australia with more than 20 years’ experience and multiple associated handbooks available. He advises risk managers to act as coaches, advisors and mentors supporting everybody in the organization in managing risk.

Risk Management and ISO 31000 in the United Kingdom:

We at isotc262.org interviewed the Heads of the Delegations of the National Standardization Bodies that attended the meeting of Technical Committee 262 in Amman. They will be published consecutively. Fiona Davidge was the head of the UK delegation. She has been a risk manager for more than 15 years and is a member of the BSI (British Standards Institute) Risk Management Committee. We interviewed Raida Mashal, founder and chair of IRM Jordan and Palestine RG and the CEO of the Jordan Risk Management Center for Training (JRMC) which is offering the broadest range of risk management training, helping organizations in applying enterprise risk management and conducting risk management researches. We asked questions about JSMO, the Jordan standardization organization and the impact of ISO 31000 in Jordan. JSMO hosts TC 262 at its October meeting in Amman.
